Looking for a good FPS - single-player

Post by Monkey_Boy1 on Tue Aug 09, 2011 2:48 pm

I'm looking for a good FPS (can have elements of other genres as well) to play - just looking for a good single-player experience.

I play enough BFBC2 online to cover that - don't want to get invested in another online shooter, but do want a good single-player FPS game.

Suggestions?

I've heard some good things about Borderlands and the STALKER series. Does Fallout 3/Vegas sort of fall into that category as well?

Thoughts on those or any other suggestions?

I just started playing Frontines: Fuel of War and it's looking to be a really great FPS. For 19 $ US on Steam, it's a great deal IMO.

Stalker series: a definite yes. A rich environment, although it can get a bit drab as, well, it does take place in a post-nuclear world. hem.

I wouldn't recommend Borderlands as a FPS, but rather as a game best played online with friends.

Fallout 3 is an RPG with shooter elements, so it doesn't really qualify as an FPS.

Two of my favorites are Mass Effect (1 and 2 so maybe it's 3 of my favorites) and Metro 2033.
Those two were really fun games for me, they both had interesting choices of how to play.
I also really like Borderlands, and I own the stalker games, but I haven't really played them yet.

My vote would be Borderlands with Stalker as a very close second.

STALKER and Metro are among my top choices. The Mass Effect series are, like Falllout, RPGs with guns, but not really shooters IMO. For single-player, I feel that Borderlands is a waste, given that it gets orders of magnitude better with friends.

The first Far Cry is one great, great classic that you should not miss, like Half-Life 2. They are older, yet they are such huge classics that not playing them is really missing out. The first FEAR is also an awesome single-player FPS experience, with horror elements. And of course the first crysis. And then there are COD 4 and 5.

So here is my rundown, in order from least great to greatest among these faves of mine:

10. Call of Duty: World at war
9. STALKER shadow of chernobyl
8. FEAR
7. STALKER clear sky
6. STALKER call of pripyat
5. Metro 2033
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
3. Crysis
2. Far Cry
1. Half-Life 2 (and episodes)

These are my tastes anyway.

I've got FarCry 2 in my library - just haven't played it. Also have Half-Life 2, just haven't played it in a very long time. Played Crysis a while ago and enjoyed it, even though it choked my gaming laptop and beat it silly.

Borderlands - since all I care about is single-player for this, the fact it might be better on-line doesn't matter to me, if it is fun single-player, that is all I need. Need for it to go back on-sale....

Looks like I'll be looking for Borderlands, COD, Stalker, and Metro to go on sale and pick something up.

thanks and if you have any other suggestions - please put them out there..

I generally don't play many games on-line..so the single-player portion of a game is very important to me.

thx

From what I have seen, Far Cry 2 is a far cry from the first in terms of game play. Graphics are said to be very pretty, but game play I hear is completely uninspiring.

I'll probably play it sometime...

I've played Far Cry 2 and it is nothing like the first one but a good game none the less. It can get long and repetitive but if you like doing missions to collect things and upgrade things then you will like it.

For me Storywise, I'd Go with Metro 2033....

I stand corrected, I will give it a go I guess! Smile

STALKER STALKER STALKER STALKER
that's pretty much the answer. The modding community is also very strong for it, lots of ways to experience the games. The most memorable for me is Shadow of Chernobyl, but maybe that's just nostalgia talking. As far as the least-buggy vanilla, Call of Pripyat wins.

Metro 2033 was pretty fun too, but unless you have a brand new rig, you will either have to turn all the settings way down or have fun with a slide show. It shares a lot of thematic similarities to STALKER, but it is very linear where as STALKER is more open-world gameplay for the most part.

Far Cry 2 is initially quite fun, but if you look up "artificial padding" in the dictionary, it would have a picture of the Far Cry 2 box. If you enjoy driving back and forth across a map repeating the same 3 quests ad nauseam, then go for it. Otherwise, there's better games more worth your time.

As far as Fallout 3/NV, they are both excellent games, and some of my all-time favorites, but if you are looking for pure FPS fun, they don't really fit the bill. You should think of them more as RPG's that use guns and a first-person perspective.

Borderlands suffers from the same issues as Fary Cry 2 -- lots of tedium and repetitive fetch quest padding. But it is a glorious shooter, and as was previously stated, if you can find 3 friends to play with, it becomes markedly more fun. I have it and still need to beat a few things on DLC, so if you want to play, give me a ring.

Of course, you can always go back in time and play classics from the Half Life series, Doom series, or the original Crysis (crysis 2 is garbage). I actually think the original Far Cry is an extremely fun shooter.

In any case, I own all of the above, so feel free to ask me any questions
